1- King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty performed severe penance for Lord Shiva on the mountain situated on the banks of the Narmada and pleased Lord Shiva with his penance. Seeing the harsh penance of King Mandhata, Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to ask for a boon. Then King Mandhata requested that Lord Shiva stay there. Since then, that place has come to be known as Omkar Mandhata. Due to the severe penance of King Mandhata on this mountain, this mountain also came to be known as Mandhata Mountain. Since then, Lord Shiva has resided on the mountain of this island in the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. “Omkar’s first utterance came from Lord Brahma, the universe’s creator.”
2- There is a famous mythological story about Mother Narmada associated with Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. It is said that Mother Narmada was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and loved him very much; hence, she wanted to stay close to Lord Shiva. Mother Narmada performed rigorous penance to please Lord Shiva, and Lord Shiva was extremely pleased with the penance of Mother Narmada. Impressed by the devotion of Mother Narmada, Lord Shiva gave her a boon that she would reside in the form of Shivalinga on an island in the Narmada River. 3- There is also a mythological story related to Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga that once upon a time Narada Muni lived on Vindhyachal mountain. After this, mountain king Vindhyachal said to Maharishi Narad – ‘I am Sarvagun Chaudhary.’ I have everything.’ When mountain king Vindhyachal died, sage Narada said to mountain king Vindhyachal that I have come to know that you are endowed with all the virtues, but still you are smaller than Mount Sumeru. Look at Mount Sumeru which goes up to heaven, but there you can never reach Mount Sumeru, that is, you can never reach Mount Sumeru.
Hearing these words of Narad Muni, Parvatraj became very excited in Vindhyachal and started thinking about proving himself. This great thing of Muni Narad was told to the mountain king Vindhyachal and the mountain king Vindhyachal was in great trouble because he was being insulted here. Raj Vindhyachal performed rigorous penance of Lord Bholenath for about 6 months with the desire to worship Lord Shiva at his highest place. Lord Shiva appeared from the harsh penance of mountain king Vindhyachal and Lord Shiva described mountain king Vindhyachal as glorious. On this, mountain king Vindhyachal said, ‘Hey! May God give me wisdom and may the work I start be successful. In this way Vindhyachal mountain was attained.
